FAQ
National Living Wage
HMRC guidance states that a salary sacrifice arrangement can’t reduce cash earnings below the
National Living Wage rates. The current rate (April 2023) is £9.50 per hour. A rate of £10.80 is going
to be the new hourly rate threshold for any applications where we receive 1-year contracts, £10.97
for 2-year contracts and £11.20 for 3-year contracts. This gives us, as the organisation sufficient
headroom to allow a salary sacrifice to be taken out and run without trouble until April 2024. HR
complete regular NLW checks to ensure staff do not fall below National Living Wage. Please note this
may result in orders being declined.
What is Salary Sacrifice?
A salary sacrifice happens when an employee gives up the right to receive part of the cash pay due
under their contract of employment. The sacrifice is made in return for the employer’s agreement to
provide the employee with a benefit. As the savings are made, staff will see a reduction in the
amount of tax, NI and pension contributions (if contributing to a pension). Entering a salary sacrifice
agreement constitutes a change in staff terms & conditions.
What is a Net Deduction?
A net deduction is taken from the salary after tax, NI and pension contributions (this is a set amount
and does not attract any further savings).
