Local advice on hand during Eating Disorders Awareness Week

16 February, 2011

Representatives from the teams will be at St. Stephen’s Shopping Centre in Hull on Saturday 26th February from 9am – 5pm for people to talk in confidence about any eating disorder related issues. They will also have a range of information leaflets that people can pick up.

“This event has an important role in raising the awareness of eating disorders as psychological illnesses that have major impacts on physical and mental health,”  says Marg Oaten MBE, Secretary and Co-founder of SEED Eating Disorder Support Services.

Eating disorders have no age or gender barriers and also have a profound effect on the carers of individual sufferers.  In the UK, eating disorders affect 1.6 million* people and anorexia nervosa has the highest death rate of all mental health problems.  Based on national figures, there are approximately 15,584 people experiencing eating disorders across the areas of Hull and the East Riding.”

If you are experiencing an eating disorder your GP should be your first contact. For impartial advice you can speak to a member of SEED in confidence on helpline number 01482 718130 or visitwww.seedeatingdisorders.org.uk.
