Raise awareness of the world’s 8th biggest killer

25 July, 2014

How much do you know about hepatitis? On Monday 28th July people in Hull are being asked to support World Hepatitis Day and to think twice about the condition. Recent estimates suggest that nationally around 215,000 people are chronically infected with hepatitis C, with deaths rising from 98 in 1996 to 381 in 2011. It kills as many as 1.5 million people each year; as many as HIV/AIDS.

City Health Care Partnership CIC, Hull City Council and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust are teaming up and asking people to get involved and raise awareness of World Hepatitis Day.

You can tweet your thoughts and experiences on hepatitis by using the hashtag #thinkhepatitis. involving the people of Hull in a global campaign to raise awareness and share their views with people across the world.

You can catch hepatitis by a number of means, including injecting illicit substances and unsafe sex; by raising awareness of World Hepatitis Day it is hoped to bring attention to the different types of the disease, the different ways it can be contracted or passed on and how to avoid catching it.

For further information or advice on hepatitis contact Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals on 07795 061 873 or 07795 470 745, Conifer Sexual Health Services on 01482 336336 or visit www.conifersexhealth.co.uk. A free Conifer Sex Health app is also available on Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
