Stamford Bridge Community Pool - March 2021

STAMFORD BRIDGE COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL are delighted to announce that the re-lining of the pool has been completed on time and within budget and the pool will re-open to the Swim Schools, private hire, Sunday Family Swim and Tuesday Adult Swim from Monday 10 January.

The cost of the pool refurbishment cost around £25,000. The committee are extremely grateful to the many people who helped by supporting our crowd funding appeal and also the very generous support we had from Aviva Community Fund, Bernard Sunley Foundation and City Health Care Partnership Foundation Small Grants.   The committee had also managed to save money into a reserve fund to help with the cost. Without the support of the pool’s many friends the refurbishment could not have been achieved.  Thank you to everyone who supported the fund.

The contractor who completed the re-lining was Poly Advisory and the repainting of the changing rooms and pool hall and cleaning were done by committee members and volunteers.

On Sunday 9 January 2022 the pool was officially re-opened in a small celebration with the committee due to the incidence of the Omicron variant.  The Pool Committee and life guards attended and a ribbon was cut by Shelley Lawton, Margaret King, Chris Kealy and Ben Feer, all playing a key role in making this project a success. Following this a small number of people took the first swim in the pool.

Background

The Pool is a very valuable community asset which is incredibly well supported by the residents of Stamford Bridge and Catton and further afield.  Thousands of children have learnt to swim in the pool since it was first opened in 1981. It still fulfils that function but is also very popular with families who are able to hire it privately for parties etc. The Pool is owned by Stamford Bridge Parents and Carers Together (PACT) but run by a committee of parents and residents who feel passionately about the need for every child to learn to swim. Originally the money to build the pool was raised entirely by community fundraising without the assistance of grants, a testament to the generosity and community spirit of the two villages. The fund raising started in 1974 and the pool was finally by built in 1981. It was then an open air pool and over the years further fund raising and commitment by the then committee members allowed a building to be erected over the pool and changing areas, finally about 8 years ago a porch was erected in order to conserve heat in the changing rooms.
