Free mouth cancer checks

07 November, 2016

To support November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month, City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC) are offering free mouth cancer examinations to people in the East Riding of Yorkshire, to make everyone aware of mouth cancer and the importance of regular check-ups in tackling this

Bridlington – Monday 14 November, 10am - 7pm

Bridlington Spa, South Marine Drive, Bridlington, YO15 3JH

Tracey Wiles from CHCP CIC’s oral health promotion team said, “Mouth cancer does not have the public awareness that other forms of cancer do, yet shockingly it claims more lives every year than testicular and cervical cancer combined.  We need to change this.

“We want to spread awareness of mouth cancer and its causes, signs and symptoms to catch the disease early enough to beat it.

“Simply come along to the Spa to have your simple, easy and free examination. It last about 15 minutes and checks your whole mouth including cheeks, lips, tongue and gums. We held this event last year in Bridlington and screened 85 members of the public; eight people had signs of mouth cancer and were referred on for treatment. Without the check, this might not have been discovered for a long time, delaying treatment and increasing the risk.”

Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, Mouth Cancer Action Month is aiming to reduce the number of lives lost to mouth cancer by ensuring we are all aware of the symptoms and causes of the disease.

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE added, “We are thankful for the support of City Health Care Partnership CIC. Mouth Cancer Action Month relies on the support of the dental industry and with their support we will save lives.

“Mouth cancer is one of the UK’s fastest increasing cancers, with cases up by almost 40 per cent in the last decade alone. Public awareness remains vital to combatting the disease and through us all being ‘Mouthaware’ and spotting mouth cancer early enough, we are giving everyone the best possible chance to be successfully treated and have a good quality of life.

“I would advise everybody in the local area to take City Health Care Partnership CIC up on this opportunity.  Survival rates for those with mouth cancer have not improved in the last 20 years and examination initiatives like this can make a real difference.”

Just come along to Bridlington for your free check; it could save your life!
