Free mouth cancer screening available in the East Riding
31 October, 2013
Open sessions have been set up across the region to educate people on the symptoms of mouth cancer. The sessions, which will be held in Bridlington and Goole, will offer free screening and advice to those who attend.
City Health Care Partnership (CHCP CIC) Dental Services and Specialist Public Health Services have set up three open sessions, to raise awareness, provide advice and carry out free mouth cancer screening sessions in accordance with Mouth Cancer Action Month 2013.
The sessions are free and people can drop in with no appointment.
Gill Greenwood, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at CHCP CIC, would like to raise awareness of the disease and encourage more people to get checked regularly:
“The cases of mouth cancer are increasing on a yearly basis and unfortunately, tobacco use and drinking alcohol are the main risk factors, accounting for 75% of cases in the UK. We have set up these sessions to encourage people to take notice of this disease. If it is caught early the chances of survival are transformed to more than 90% of cases.
“Cases tend to be higher in those who drink, smoke or have a poor diet, but more recently, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) transmitted via oral sex has been linked to mouth cancer and younger people are particularly at risk. Mouth cancer kills more people than cervical cancer and testicular cancer combined, so we have set up three locations across the region to offer free screening and advice, no appointment is necessary.”
