Health staff train to help veterans
28 September, 2016
Health workers at City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC) are learning to understand the needs of veterans who have left the armed forces.
The Understanding Military Culture and Transition CPD (Continuing Personal Development) training will be led by Nick Wood from York St John University and provided by Health Education Yorkshire and Humber. This is in line with new NHS Constitution Handbook 2015 guidance which states that:
‘For those with concerns about their mental health who may not present for some time after leaving Service, they should be able to access services with health professionals who have an understanding of Armed Forces culture. Veterans who have lost a limb as a result of their service will be able to access prostheses that reflect their clinical need’.
By undertaking this CPD training, CHCP CIC staff are complying with both the Armed Forces Covenant and NHS Constitution guidance and leading by example in the provision of care for Hull’s ex armed forces community.
Elaine Nisbet, director of people and engagement at CHCP CIC, said, “We feel that this training is extremely important and valuable to our colleagues who come into contact with veterans in the course of their work.
“We are not only keen to comply with the NHS Constitution but also recognise our commitment to the health of those who have served their country in the Armed Forces. We hope that this training will give all those who undertake it the tools to understand and work with veterans who access our services.”
