International recognition for local doctor

04 December, 2013

Dr Kate Guthrie, Clinical Director of the Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Services and Medical Director of City Health Care Partnership CIC has won an award for an outstanding article in the journal Contraception from the North American Forum on Family Planning.

The 2012-2013 Daniel R Mishell Jr, MD, Outstanding Article Award honours the principal investigators who have published superior articles in Contraception over the preceding academic year. In addition, these articles were judged to have best demonstrated high-quality methodology, excellent presentation of results and an exceptional understanding of the impact of the article relative to other literature and, where relevant, clinical practice.

Dr Guthrie’s article, Fatal flaws in a recent meta-analysis on abortion and mental health, was written in partnership with other sexual health experts and published in November 2012.

‘I’m delighted that our work has been recognised in this way,’ said Dr Guthrie. ‘The impact of abortion on women’s mental health is a matter of hot debate, but we argue that the unbiased evidence presented in the high quality Royal College of Psychiatrists review shows definitively that abortion does not increase women's risk of mental health problems relative to an unintended birth. There is a lot of bad and methodologically incorrect science quoted which states otherwise.’
