Local health staff highly commended at national awards
13 February, 2014
The national Thrombus Innovation Awards took place in London on Friday 7 February and two nurses from City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC) came away with their projects being highly commended.
The Thrombus Awards are designed to highlight innovation and excellence that have benefitted patients who have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other blood clotting disorders. DVT nurse practitioner Helen Connington entered her team’s project, “Establishing a care pathway for assessing housebound patients with suspected DVT”. This provides a responsive, accessible service so patients are seen and assessed within four hours of referral from the GP, meaning housebound patients can receive the same assessment and treatment at home as they would in the DVT clinic. All the patients seen on the home visit pathway were happy with the service and grateful that they were not going to be admitted to hospital.
Michelle Kennedy, practice development nurse and the whole of CHCP CIC’s anticoagulation team entered a project on "Modernisation of the home visit process for Warfarin management of housebound patients". This led to 100% of patients being given a specific day for their home visit, ensuring safe anticoagulation management.
Lynda Whincup, director of adult services at CHCP CIC, said, “This is a great achievement for the DVT and Anticoagulation staff. It’s very gratifying to see all their hard work and innovation recognised at a national level, as patient feedback shows that the team is doing a brilliant job in treating people with this type of condition.”
