‘Lungs are for Life’, Not Just for Childhood

22 June, 2010

Specialists come together for a day to educate parents and children on how to look after their lungs, and the long term benefits of a smoke free home.

City Health Care Partnership CIC has teamed up with the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) Breathe-Easy Week which runs from the 14-20 June. To raise awareness of the week there will be a stand in St Stephen’s shopping centre on Thursday 17 June, to educate parents and children across Hull how to breathe-easy and to look after their lungs for life.

The stand will be ran by our Specialist Asthma Team and the Smoke Free Homes Team, who will be providing advice, knowledge and support on a range of respiratory conditions in children, this goes hand in hand with information on the benefits of a smoke free home environment for children.

Daryl Perkins, Paediatric Asthma Specialist Nurse comments:

“We feel it is very important to educate both parents and children regarding their lungs and how to take care of them as they grow up. To raise awareness of Breathe Easy week we will have a stand in St Stephens to educate children and parents about  a whole range of respiratory conditions and things that they can do to help prevent symptoms.

For example, children who live in a house where there parent smokes, have a higher risk of suffering with breathing related illnesses, including asthma.”

This year, the Breathe Easy Week will also see’s the launch of the Children’s Charter, a campaign run by the British Lung Foundation to improve lung health in children, as well as support and care for children with lung disease.
