Macmillan team are finalists in Nursing Times Awards

25 June, 2014

The shortlist for the prestigious national Nursing Times awards 2014 has been announced and City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC), local provider of community health and social care services, is delighted to have been chosen as a finalist.

CHCP CIC’s End of Life Care Academy has been shortlisted in the Nursing in the Community category. The Academy was developed by the Community Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Team to enhance the skills and knowledge of community nurses to meet the needs of services.

So far 36 staff have attended the Academy (with another 14 currently taking part), which runs over nine study sessions, and their end of life care knowledge and skills have improved; they also say they feel more confident and competent and there is a waiting list to take part.

Bev Clark, Macmillan Practice Development Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care, who helped to set up the Academy, says, “To ensure that end of life patients who wish to remain at home and their families receive the best possible care, delivered by skilled, capable and competent nursing staff it’s essential for community care providers to offer ongoing education and training.  By delivering the End of Life Care Academy in our community we are effectively addressing the educational needs of our community nurses.”

CHCP CIC’s Operational Director for Adult Services and Nursing, Lynda Whincup, says, “The End of Life Academy is very important for all nursing staff involved in end of life care and it’s unique to our services. I’m absolutely delighted that it’s been shortlisted for such a major award.”

One nurse who attended the Academy said, ““It has strengthened my passion for palliative care, giving me the confidence to deliver a compassionate service”.
