New Medical, Health and Social Care Academy launch

As part of Hull 2020, the vision for the better future of Hull where all organisations work together as one system, local public service providers are teaming up with St Mary’s College to give young people the chance the pursue a career in the NHS.
The Medical, Health and Social Care Academy will be launched at 6pm on 1 July 2015 at St Mary’s on Cranbrook Avenue. Its aim is to give young people the opportunity to gain qualifications that will allow them to go straight into jobs with the local NHS workforce or on to further or higher education, including nursing, medicine and allied health professions.
The Academy will offer the appropriate qualifications, experience and enrichment programmes that are needed to nurture and develop a local NHS workforce at all levels of employment, encouraging our young people to study and work closer to home and keeping their skills in the local area. It will initially be offering courses to Key Stage 5 students in Hull and the East Riding who are looking to become doctors, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and direct patient carers. This will be expanded to develop other NHS specialist careers in the future.
City Health Care Partnership CIC is a key partner in Hull 2020 and chief executive Andrew Burnell said, “We are proud to be part of this fantastic development for young people in our city. Keeping the talents and enthusiasm of our home-grown doctors, nurses and health professionals in the local area will not only help them develop and progress in their careers, it will also mean that our patients are being treated by professionals who know and understand about the unique challenges and opportunities in our Hull and the East Riding.”
Young people and their parents from across the area are invited to attend the launch to find out more about what the Academy can offer them and about the variety of careers in the medical, health and social care sectors. Key figures in local NHS commissioning and health care provision will be speaking and there will be a ‘marketplace’ for prospective students to talk to employers.

Hull Medical, Health and Social Care Academy’s enhanced programme will help our next generation develop the skills and experience needed to secure fulfilling careers in health and social care. We want Hull to cultivate its own workforce of clinicians, allied health professionals and social workers who are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of everyone in our area.”
