New technology protects NHS staff when lone working

Staff will use these devices to monitor, and record incidents, where they feel their safety is compromised. Staffs movements are logged into a database and their position can be tracked via GPS technology as well having the ability to summon the police if the situation demands it. With the facility to audio record, these devices can be used in criminal and civil proceedings and / or to take local sanctions against alleged offenders.

Paul Jibson, Head of Risk and Integrated Governance for City Health Care Partnership explained:

 “This new system provides our staff with a service that they can use to signal discreetly for assistance should they feel vulnerable or distressed when working alone. The plan is to roll out 500 devices throughout May and June to those staff exposed to higher risk roles and environments, making their job safer and more secure”

In 2009 there were 90 reported security incidents against NHS Hull Provider Services staff. This is broken down into 82 reported ‘verbal abuse' incidents and 8 incidents involving 'physical assault/violence'. 

In line with the new NHS Constitution, steps have been taken to issue safety devices as a small minority of the public do verbally and physically abuse NHS staff. The devices will help the NHS to deliver healthy and safe working conditions for their staff and an environment free from harassment, bullying or violence.

The roll out to 500 staff members, identified through their managers and through risk assessment, has started this week with training sessions followed by the devices being issued. The first devices go live from today

Julie Danby, Respiratory Specialist Nurse who works in the community stated that she felt safer in the knowledge that someone could be listening, and get assistance, in the unlikely event of needing urgent help, she said:

“The new devices have given me confidence and assurance knowing there is support and back up in the event of my safety being compromised.”
