Public warned to be aware of hidden dangers

02 December, 2010

Health service bosses are warning the public to be aware of icy pavements underneath the snow and to take extra care when going out.

Jim Deacon is Assistant Director of Emergency Planning for NHS Hull, he warns:

“When the snow does begin to melt it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security that the paths and roads are safe.  It is likely that they will both be extremely icy underneath and we are urging people, particularly the elderly to be very careful if they do venture out.

 “Last winter during the bad weather we saw a huge rise in the number of people going to the region’s A&E departments following a slip or a fall.  First and foremost, we want to try and avoid people falling at all, so people need to take extra care and wear flat shoes or boots with a good grip. For anyone who does end up needing  treatment, we would reminded them that Minor Injuries Units are able to deal with a range of injuries including sprains and strains, cuts and grazes and bumps and bruises. ”

Jim continues;

“We would like to thank all the NHS staff who have battled through the elements to keep essential services going and the public for their ongoing patience and understanding during what is a difficult period for health services.  Obviously we have had to prioritise treating those people who need urgent care and those with serious ongoing health conditions.  Patients are reminded to telephone in advance to check if any appointments they have are still going ahead.”
