New course to help families understand dementia

15 January, 2015

‘Understanding Dementia and Responding Positively’ is a free evening course delivered by the Dementia Academy for family and friends of people with dementia. The course will be run by the Carers’ Information and Support Service (CISS) Care-About Project provided by City Health Care Partnership CIC.

The aim of the course is to help people to explore the nature and the effects of dementia on their family member or friend in greater depth; it’s free of charge and convenient for anyone with a busy lifestyle. It also offers practical advice and useful techniques.

The evening course will support family and friends around effective communication, practical and effective ways of responding to behaviours and emotions, the concept of unmet need, why potentially “challenging” behaviour occurs. This can all assist in working positively with their family member or friend with dementia.

“Heather Kelly, manager of CISS, said, “We are proud to be offering such a well thought-out course to family members and friends of people with dementia, an understanding of what their loved one is experiencing  and how to respond, has really been invaluable to those who have accessed this support previously.”

The evening support course is run over two sessions and are held on Tuesday 3rd February and Tuesday 10th February 2015, 6pm until 8pm at the Alderson Resource Centre, Linnaeus Street, Hull, HU3 2TR (opposite Hull Royal Infirmary).

To book a place or for further information please contact CISS on 01482 222220 and ask for Danielle Mackay or Beverley Shore or email chcp.carersinfo@nhs.net. Places are on a first come, first served basis.
