Prevention in Practice

The team have a key role in training dental practitioners and dental care professionals in all areas of prevention and to support general dental practices to further promote oral health within their own practices and local community through a public health approach. 

MECC  Oral

MECC Training

There has been some great feed back from previous sessions "Great concise and effective training"
"Training was well structured and engaging"

The initial stage of the Prevention in Practice programme involved a free verifiable CPD training session in Making Every Contact Count (MECC).

The aims of the MECC training:

  • To enable the dental team to have all the neccessary competencies and skills to support behaviour change and ultimately improve the oral and general health of the local population
  • To enable the dental team to respond to the health needs of their patients
  • To provide information on where to access further advice and support from the wider public health teams
  • To provide all dental practices in Hull with MECC assessment sheets to enable the dental team to refer directly into Specialist Public Health services such as the Stop Smoking service and alcohol and drug services

MECC Update Training

The Oral Health Promotion team are now able to offer dental practices an update on MECC services available to their patients in the East Riding area. Dental practices who access training will receive up to date information on Refferal Forms & MECC links. The duration of the training is 1 hour and will be delivered via *Microsoft Teams.

Learning outcomes of the training:

•To explain the importance of MECC

•To recognise common risk factors shared with the major oral diseases

•To identify MECC services that are currently available to dental practices in the East Riding

•To explain the different MECC referral methods, how to refer and what happens next

•To identify who to contact for further information

Delivering Better Oral Health Training

The second stage of the Prevention in Practice programme provides dental practices with FREE verifiable CPD training outlining the key oral health themes that form the guidance entitled Delivering Better Oral health (2014). The duration of the training is 1 hour and will be delivered via *Microsoft Teams.

Stop Smoking

All dental practices in the East Riding have been offered MECC referral sheets to enable the dental team to refer directly into Specialist Public Health services such as the Stop Smoking service and alcohol services.
